May 2026 marks an exciting month for local historians, conservationists, Waterton Park Hotel and the local area in general as ‘Wallfest’ is coming to town! If you weren’t aware, historic Walton is home to the world’s first nature reserve, situated on the grounds around the Hall here at the hotel. Charles Waterton built a three mile long wall around it and this year it celebrates its 200th birthday Co-ordinated by @watertons_wall_friends the month long series of events is a celebration of Charles Waterton and his Wall. The events centre around the themes of nature, creativity/culture, heritage, and wellbeing. Full details and programme can be found below, but one event that we are particularly looking forward to, staged here at the hotel is: ‘An Evening With Charles Waterton’ His wall. His stories. His travels. His legacy. ‘Step back to May 1826 and join celebrated naturalist Charles Waterton as he marks the completion of the extraordinary nine-foot-high wall encircling his estate. A visionary sanctuary created to protect the wildlife within. But as the evening unfolds, an unexpected mystery arises. Why have one hundred strangers appeared in his dining room? Are they eager to uncover the secrets of taxidermy? Or perhaps to hear captivating tales of adventure from the depths of the South American jungle? Join a somewhat bewildered Charles Waterton as he recounts stories from his remarkable life, shares his passion for conservation, and reflects on the future…plus the enduring legacy of his famous wall.’ Saturday 16th May 6:45pm: Prosecco reception on arrival.
